Thirty-five years inside a single institution — from an entry-grade officer in 1990 to the Managing Director’s chair at India’s largest life insurer.

Marketing. Pension and group schemes. International operations. Investment. Four distinct disciplines, one Corporation, one continuous record of service.

02 The appointment

An appointment made entirely from within

On 1 December 2025, by a notification of the Government of India of the same date, Ramakrishnan Chander was elevated to the rank of Managing Director of the Life Insurance Corporation of India. He did not arrive from outside the Corporation, from a rival insurer or from a regulator. He arrived from the floor below.

Thirty-five years earlier, in 1990, he had entered LIC as an Assistant Administrative Officer — the Corporation’s direct-recruit officer grade, the ordinary front door. Everything between those two dates was served inside the same institution: divisions in Nagpur and Hyderabad, zonal marketing in the South, pension and group schemes in the South Central Zone, the Corporation’s international business, and finally its investment floor.

That continuity is the defining fact of the record. In an industry that increasingly recruits its leadership laterally, LIC continues to raise its Managing Directors through its own ranks — and the appointment of December 2025 is a clear instance of it.
